This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to American Studies, examining the historical, political, economic, and cultural development of the United States from its origins to the present. Students explore how American identity has been shaped through key processes such as nation-building, democratization, industrialization, immigration, and globalization. The course addresses core themes including the U.S. political system and Constitution, the evolution of American democracy, foreign policy, economic power, and the country’s role in global governance. Special attention is given to issues of race, ethnicity, gender, diversity, and social inequality, as well as to cultural traditions ranging from Puritanism to contemporary society. Through critical engagement with topics such as migration, multiculturalism, the American Dream, and current societal challenges, students develop a deeper understanding of the complexities of American society. The course also aims to strengthen students’ analytical skills by working with academic sources and constructing well-reasoned arguments. By the end of the course, students will be able to critically assess major developments in U.S. history and culture and connect them to contemporary political and social development.
