The course is an introduction to the intellectual foundations of archaeological research. We will examine various analytical methods and theoretical concepts used in archaeology to interpret artifacts, archaeological sites, and prehistoric societies. The course focuses on the subjects archaeologists typically study, the methods and techniques used to analyze material culture, and archaeological discourse. With an emphasis on the last approx. 150 years, that is, since the beginnings of formal discipline of archaeology, the course will give students an overview of important issues in Euro-American archaeology, to familiarize them with where research questions come from and how archaeologists decide which methods and theoretical
concepts to apply. Topics to be covered include the different research paradigms that form the foundations of archaeological inquiry and approaches for using material culture to answer questions about societies in the past.
